Why I Chose France: The Initial Decision

Moving to a new country is one of the biggest decisions you can make, and for me, choosing France as my new home was both exciting and daunting. As I reflect on this journey, I want to share the reasons behind my decision and what drew me to France as the place where I would start a new chapter in life.

A Blend of History, Culture, and Modern Life

France is a country that embodies a unique blend of rich history, timeless art, and vibrant modern culture. From the cobblestone streets of medieval towns to the sleek architecture of contemporary Paris, France offers a lifestyle that caters to both tradition and modernity. As someone who’s always been fascinated by history and culture, living in a country where I could visit world-famous museums like the Louvre, see iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, and experience the cultural diversity of French cities was a huge draw for me.

Beyond the tourist attractions, France offers something deeper—an immersion in a way of life that balances work and leisure in a way that felt more in tune with how I wanted to live.

The Appeal of the French Lifestyle

One of the most compelling reasons I chose France was the lifestyle. The French have a way of embracing the simple pleasures in life—whether it’s a leisurely lunch in a charming café, browsing fresh produce at local markets, or enjoying an evening walk by the Seine. There’s a focus on quality over quantity, which contrasts sharply with the fast-paced, always-on lifestyle that I was used to.

The concept of joie de vivre—the joy of living—felt like something I wanted to incorporate into my own life. France, with its emphasis on work-life balance, long lunch breaks, and generous vacation policies, seemed like the perfect place to experience a more relaxed and fulfilling way of life.

Inspired by My French Teacher

My journey toward choosing France actually began years ago, during my time as a student in Colombia, where I was pursuing a BA in Foreign Languages. It was my French teacher who first opened my eyes to the beauty of the language and the richness of French culture.

Their passion for the French way of life, literature, and history was contagious, and from that moment, I was hooked. I remember the excitement I felt when learning French for the first time, imagining what it would be like to walk the streets of Paris or have conversations in French cafés. That early inspiration stayed with me, and it was a significant factor in my decision to make France my new home.

I wanted to experience first-hand the country I had admired for so long and take the next step in truly mastering the language I had fallen in love with back in the classroom.

A Gateway to Europe

Another significant reason for choosing France was its geographical location at the heart of Europe. With France as my base, I can easily travel to neighboring countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, and Belgium with just a short train ride or flight. For someone who loves exploring new cultures and destinations, this was a huge advantage.

Living in France gives me access not only to the beauty of French cities and the stunning countryside but also to the rest of Europe, allowing me to experience diverse cultures and landscapes in a way I could never do before.

Professional Opportunities in France

Beyond the cultural appeal, I also chose France for professional reasons. France is home to numerous international companies, startups, and innovative industries, particularly in cities like Paris, Lyon, and Toulouse. I saw opportunities for personal and career growth in sectors like technology, design, and hospitality—fields where France has made significant strides globally.

France also offers several visa programs that support professionals, entrepreneurs, and students, making it an attractive destination for people looking to advance their careers while enjoying a high quality of life. Knowing that I could work, network, and grow my career while living in such a beautiful country made the decision even easier.

An Opportunity to Learn French

Learning a new language was both an exciting challenge and a key reason why I chose France. French is not only one of the most widely spoken languages globally, but it’s also the language of diplomacy, art, and international business. Immersing myself in French was a personal goal, and living here would allow me to learn it in a way that no classroom ever could.

Although it’s been challenging at times, the opportunity to learn a new language and become more integrated into the French way of life has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey.

A Place to Call Home

At the end of the day, France felt like a place where I could truly see myself building a life. The combination of its cultural richness, professional opportunities, and quality of life made it an ideal destination for me. While every immigration journey comes with its challenges, I knew that France was a place where I could grow, learn, and embrace a new chapter of life.

For anyone considering a move to France, my advice is to embrace the journey, be open to new experiences, and enjoy everything this beautiful country has to offer. For me, it’s been one of the most life-changing decisions I’ve ever made, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
